FISHING Some basic information: Hakuna Matata is located directly on the Saloum river, with direct access to the Mar Ignane fishing area. This fishing zone is considered one of the best in the region. The delta that surrounds the lodge is subject to the same tidal movements as the ocean but with a 40 minute delay. The bottom is mostly sandy and undisturbed, with depths ranging from 9 to 60 feet. The fishing guides know all of the rocks and reefs in the area by heart and are happy to take you to them. The water of the delta is surprisingly clear and visibility is always greater than 10 feet. HAKUNA MATATA offers several different kinds of fishing: Trips that require a boat use traditional Senegalese pirogues outfitted with modern motors. Each boat is run by a dedicated captain and first mate. These fishermen are native to the area and will take you where the fish are biting at the time. Generally, fishing from these boats consists of fishing baits off of the bottom. This action depends on the tides and is best when they are moving fast. Guides provide fresh shrimp or strips of local baitfish, entire squids, or live bait when fishing off of the bottom. The fishing gear used for this kind of fishing must be capable of sustaining the runs of big fish while also providing enough sensitivity to feel subtle takes. The guides can provide each fisherman or woman with 1 or 2 rods between 7 and 9 feet with a minimum weight class of 20/40 lbs. The reels are filled with braided line with a breaking strain between 30 and 100 lbs. To keep the bait on the bottom during strong tides, heavy weights are required and fluorocarbon leaders recommended. Hook sizes range between 1/0 and 5/0 depending on the type of bait being used. It is important, with all the gear in place, to pay attention because otherwise one risks being caught off guard by the violence of the takes. The species of fish found most commonly are: -The King Threadfin -Jack Crevalle -Grouper -Carpe Rouge -Carpe Noir But also: several varieties of rays, sharks, cobia, barracuda, etc. From the lodge: Shore fishing and surf-casting is also possible right from the lodge’s own beach. The sand banks are clearly visible and calm waters help indicate depth. It is always a good idea to test your luck right from our own dock. Night fishing opportunities and daytime efforts are often very fruitful. Exploratory fishing is also available through the complimentary use of the lodge’s own kayaks. Hand lining is also an option for those who want to try the local technique. If you have never felt the pull of a Carpe Rouge directly against your fingers, it is an experience worth trying. With lots of oysters, clams, and other shellfish around, why not go digging too? Our prices: 40,000 F CFA (60 Euros) for a half day of fishing from a pirogue 50,000 F CFA (75 Euros) for a full day of fishing around Devil’s Island (with a picnic lunch included) 60,000 F CFA (92 Euros) for a full day trip to Djifer (with picnic lunch included) 70,000 F CFA (106 Euros) for a full day trip to the open water shipwrecks (with picnic lunch included) Special packages are also offered (to Sangomar point, an overnight at Djifer, etc.). Finally, if you do not have your own fishing equipment, we are happy to offer you everything you will need. HAKUNA MATATA is a proud partner of the FRENCH FISHING CHAMPIONSHIPS on the ocean in boats, 2007. Fishing packages: For an all inclusive package (minimum 2 fishermen or women) for 7 days, 6 nights, and 5 days of fishing including roundtrip transportation from the airport and all taxes: 562 Euros in a double room. For an all inclusive package (minimum 2 fishermen or women) for 9 days, 8 nights, and 7 days of fishing including roundtrip transportation from the airport and all taxes: 734 Euros in a double room. *For a single angler, add 7.50 Euros per day. These packages include: -Daily access to fishing boat -Confirmed and dedicated guides for each day -The use of our tackle (excluding lures) -Fishing from shore, trolling, surf casting from camp, hand lining -The opportunity to arrange special night fishing packages -The chance to go after all of the following species: King Threadfin, Carpes Rouge, Groupers, Cobias, Carpes Noires, Rays, Sharks, Barracudas, etc. The fishing conditions in our delta are much like those on a lake, without the massive swells of the ocean.
